Republicans propose Washington Dulles Airport be renamed after Donald Trump

A group of Republican lawmakers are proposing that Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is renamed after the former, and potentially next, United States (US) President, Donald Trump.

The bill was introduced by Republican House Representative Guy Reschenthaler on March 29, 2024, and referred to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

The title of the bill, which has little chance of being passed, read, “to designate the Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia as the “Donald J. Trump International Airport”.

Representatives Chuck Fleischmann, Andy Ogles, Paul Gosar, Barry Moore, Troy Nehls and Michael Waltz were cosponsors of the documents.

“In my lifetime, our nation has never been greater than under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump. As millions of domestic and international travelers fly through the airport, there is no better symbol of freedom, prosperity and strength than hearing ‘Welcome to Trump International Airport’ as they land on American soil,” Reschenthaler told Fox News Digital.

According to the Guardian, despite the bill being unlikely to pass it could still lead to a vote in the House.

IAD was named after influential former Secretary of State John Foster Dulles who served under President Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 until his resignation in 1959.

Dulles International Airport was dedicated by President John F. Kennedy on November 17, 1962, and then in 1984 Washington was added to its name.

Washington National Airport (DCA) is already named after the previous Republican President, Ronald Reagan.
