3 Turkish Aviation Titans of the Sky: Leaving an Indelible Mark on Aviation History

While Sabiha Gökçen’s story is truly inspiring, the title of “world’s first female combat pilot” is disputed. Several other women, including Raymonde de Laroche and Evdokia Petrova, flew combat missions earlier than Gökçen. However, her achievements as a pioneering Turkish aviator and role model for countless women remain undeniable.

Here’s a revised version highlighting three remarkable individuals who left their mark on Turkish aviation:

Vecihi Hürkuş:

This “Father of Turkish Gliding” wasn’t satisfied with imported gliders. In 1925, he built his own – the Vecihi-1. This feat ignited Turkish aviation innovation, inspiring a generation of engineers and solidifying Hürkuş’s legacy as a national hero.

Sabiha Gökçen:

Adopted daughter of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Gökçen defied expectations. At 12, she embraced aviation, becoming one of the world’s first female military pilots. Trained in Russia, she flew combat missions, earning respect and paving the way for countless women in aviation, despite the ongoing debate about the “first” title.

Nuri Demirağ:

Not just a businessman, Demirağ was a visionary. Dissatisfied with importing planes, he dreamt of Turkish-made wings. In 1935, he founded the nation’s first aircraft factory, birthing the Nu-23. This sturdy plane served military and civilian roles, marking a pivotal step towards aviation self-sufficiency and making Demirağ a legend of Turkish industry.
